Note: Before installation
of the control panel we advise that you conduct a range test of the system
using one of the supplied door contact transmitters.
-
Before installation of any device,
power up the control panel via internal battery only without mains connection
and put the control in to program mode. Stand the control panel in a position
likely to be the final fixing position i.e. under stairs or hallway.
-
Log on any door contact transmitter
after checking PP3 battery has been connected inside.
-
Place the control panel into
walk test mode or door chime mode and check operation while watching control
panel and bring the door magnet to and fro of the transmitter. The control
panel should chirp in harmony to magnet movement.
-
Go to the furthest areas of
the property to be covered i.e.. garage shed etc., and bring the door magnet
to and fro of the transmitter preferably by resting the transmitter on
top of door frame or window sill where final device position is likely
to be. Try to avoid holding the transmitter as this will effect the test.
-
Ask a second person to monitor
the response of the alarm control which should chirp when the test unit
is triggered. They should verify that all the signals are received.
-
Ensure the control panel is
several metres away from computers, TV's power cables and other sources
of interference.
-
If you experience reduced range
then try relocating the control panel or detection devices but nominal
range is over 30 metres in most buildings.
-
If the range tests fails. DO
NOT install the system but contact us for advise.
If the test are successful
then continue with the rest of the installation.

Where do I get the
alarm wire?
From our on line shop,
B+Q, Wickes, Homebase etc. all sell 6 core stranded alarm cable by the
metre with the above colours and indeed an ideal place for your mains
cable, fused spur box etc. Please don't use telephone cable its not really
suitable due the solid cores.
When I power up the control
panel the alarm sounds. Is this OK?
Yes, at factory settings
out the box the control panel will go straight into alarm. This is normal
until the PIN number has been entered to place the control in to programming
condition. Please read the instructions on setting up your control panel
for more information.
As soon as I connect the
internal battery black wire inside siren the alarm sounds. Is it
faulty?
No, it is supposed to do
this to enhance security. Quality alarm sirens such as our Elmdene have
a built in battery so any attempt to cut siren wiring will result in an
alarm. However, when the siren receives 12 volts from the control panel
the siren is held quite and a small charge keeps the nicad
battery topped up. To enhance security further a tamper switch on
cover and rear of siren forms a loop back to the control panel. If this
is open or cut then the control panel will go into "tamper" alert. Depending
on configuration within the control set-up this can provide local alarm
only or full alarm i.e. siren sounds.
During installation we recommend
the tamper shorting link in the control panel remains in situ until
all other wiring and covers are complete. The control panel should be completely
set-up, powered up and back up battery fitted inside control panel as per
enclosed instructions and devices operational and tested. All wiring
apart from the red + sounder connection should be made although it must
be connected at the control panel end. You should exercise caution though
at this time as shorting this red wire can blow internal fuses as it will
have 12 volts on it. With the help of another person to silence control
panel the red wire is connected to siren. At this point the siren will
sound! Finally inside the siren connect the internal battery black flying
wire to terminal and fit cover to Siren. Once the cover is fitted the alarm
should cease but depending on configuration the control panel may need
to be reset by entering PIN number and the alarm should cease sounding.
This is where the second person is useful to prevent the siren from sounding
for too long.
When the siren installation
is completed, carefully remove tamper shorting link from PCB to invoke
full tamper protection. You may trigger the tamper circuit but a PIN reset
will clear this if the closed loop tamper circuit is intact.
Note: Check rear micro switch
on siren makes contact with flush wall surface and does not fall into brick
crevice.
How far away can
i fit a device from the control panel?
We have tested the detection
devices up to 70 metres from the control panel but in all instances you
must test device function to check range.. The radio range depends on many
factors and includes your building construction. Reinforced concrete
can reduce range considerably where an older wooden cottage will offer
the greatest range. In most cases the range is sufficient to cover
garages, sheds and other outbuildings etc.
How long do the batteries
last for?
Up to a year with quality
Duracell batteries. The batteries supplied with the system are regular
batteries and may not give maximum life due to time in storage etc. When
the battery gets low the battery warning will indicate on the control panel.
You then have a couple of weeks to replace battery. The PIR detectors
tend to use more current as they are always "busy".
My batteries are only
lasting a few weeks. Why is that?
You must ensure that after
the PIR's have been setup that the internal small black link is removed
and placed on one pin only to prevent the LED coming on. The link is for
initial range testing of the device only!
Can I use the PIR's with
pets?
We don't recommend this with
the Optima system as PIR's detect body heat but offer the best
protection to a room. However by fitting the PIR upside down the beam will
not reach the floor and setting the sensitivity link to lowest setting
(position 3) inside PIR you may still have some protection but small
dogs etc. may pass unnoticed. In extreme cases an alarm is still possible
so we recommend protection of the doors and windows with our door or window
transmitter.
Take a look at the new Visonic
Powermax System, its the only wireless system on the market today
to offer patented pet friendly PIRs immune to 40lb or 80lb animals!
How many devices can I
have?
Upto 15 radio PIR's and door/window
contact transmitters.
What does a zone mean?
A zone is an area of protection
and normally on a per floor or room basis. A zone may sometimes have more
than one device fitted so typically a house will have a front door contact
TX and a hall way PIR on zone one. Optima allows more then one device per
zone but each device is identifiable by the colour LED's. However by convention
on wired security systems and indeed some wireless systems each device
is a zone in its self and therefore each device will use up a zone allocation.
The living room may have 1 or 2 PIR's and may be zone 2. The kitchen and
dining may be zone 3 with zone 4 upstairs usually one PIR at the
top of the stairs. The shed and garage zone 5. It is important to
understand entry route zones which give you time to gain access to your
property to unset the alarm. Zone 1 is the factory default for entry route.
Access to other zones will create an immediate alarm without giving you
time to reach the control panel. This is desirable if a zone
3 window is breached as we don't want to give the burglar any time to gain
access before raising the alarm. Note: Make sure non entry route zone devices
can't "see" your normal entry to control panel so keep doors closed when
you leave. If a zone 3 device in kitchen "sees" you entering to unset
alarm then a full alarm will occur!!! The zone characteristics are programmable
though but it is important to understand this.
Can I part set or omit
a zone?
Yes this feature allows you
to keep downstairs armed at night but turns off upstairs zone when your
family sleeps. You are free to move around to the bathroom etc. but the
ground floor is fully protected.
The remote control option
here is useful as you can safely retire for the night and use radio remote
to part set or arm downstairs.
Note you cannot omit all
your zones and particularly zone 1 as this is your normal entry zone and
the system must detect primary entry in order for the countdown timer to
start.
The remote also serves as
a panic alarm on 24 hour circuit and by pressing 2 buttons together will
activate an instant alarm!
Can I be connected to
central monitoring?
No. You may only use central
monitoring on systems professional installed by a NACOSS security company
and when the alarm conforms to BS6799 part 6. (there are some exceptions)
These systems costs hundreds of pounds more and you need to consider this:
You do not have access to
a reset PIN number. Any false alarms (or real) require an expensive engineer
call out to reset your system. They must also be regularly maintained or
your system is void. Too many false alarms and you may be struck off the
police register.
Finally, there is ongoing
line monitoring cost ranging from £200-£600 per annum depending
on level of service.
Insurance**
In our experience, the reduction
in insurance premiums is actually significantly less then the cost of installing
and maintaining a class 6 system. Speak to your insures as most will accept
lower class system and will still provide some premium discount.
Update. We believe
that is now NOT advisable to contact your insurance company that you have
an alarm system fitted if you are attempting to reduce your premiums. The
reason is most insurance companies will now apply small print that if you
have an alarm you must use it ALL the time even if you are in the garden,
pop next door for 5 mins or in bed asleep (part set mode) Failure
to heed religiously to this criteria once your alarm discount has been
applied may void any insurance claim! Therefore, the only time you
should contact them is if you must have an alarm system fitted as a condition
of your standard policy because you live in a high risk area or your suffered
previously burglaries.
No one will take notice
of my alarm or will not hear it as i live in a remote place. What can I
do?
Simple. Add our SDI auto
dialler to your alarm system and plug in to your regular BT line and any
activation will phone upto 4 preselected numbers of your choice. The dialler
can call mobile phones, your work friends family in fact anyone anywhere
in the world. You or your contacts can take the appropriate action and
call the police if required. There is no ongoing cost, no line charges
(other than a phone call on activation) and you don't need NACOSS installation
or engineers reset.
Note: The use of an autodialler
cannot dial police directly. In addition the police will treat your alarm
request as an audible alarm only and the response may not be as fast as
a central monitoring station request for police attendance. We think
for domestic use this is a small price to pay as police response even to
grade 1 central station alarms can vary tremendously.
However, if you or your alarm
keyholder / contacts see a crime in progress then your alarm response will
be updated to a grade 1 response. (This is the situation as we understand
it to be but different police forces have differing response standards
to alarms and reported crimes).
Can I use your alarms
for small commercial system?
Yes of course. Make sure
a range tested is conducted so as not to exceed radio range of devices.
You should let your insurance company know which standard of alarm your
using.** see our insurance paragraph above.
Do you have radio wireless
alarms to BS6799 grade 6?
Yes we do but the cost makes
them suitable only where central monitoring is absolutely essential and
you will need to have the system installed and maintained by a NACOSS approved
company. We can appoint one local to you to install our class 6 systems.
